Fun Facts About Field Sparrows

  • The Field Sparrow can often be seen flying to the top of a grass stalk and then riding it to the ground. Only then does it begin to feed on the seed.
  • Male Field Sparrow usually returns to breed in the same territory each year. The female normally selects a new territory each year and young sparrows only rarely return to where they were born.
  • At the beginning of the mating period, the male Field Sparrow sings vigorously until he finds a mate, but after that he sings only occasionally.
